I'm going to be focusing on a book which I have already started reading - Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde. Not to be confused with 50 Shades of Grey! It is a VERY different book indeed! This is my first Jasper Fforde book and I am really enjoying the satirical humour and the world he has created. He has an amazing imagination and is a real wordsmith.
"It began with my father not wanting to see the Last Rabbit, and ended up with me being eaten by a carnivorous plant. It wasn't really what I'd planned for myself. I'd hoped to marry into the Oxbloods and join their dynastic string empire. But that was four days ago, before I'd met Jane, retrieved the Caravaggio or explored High Saffron. So instead of enjoying aspirations of Chromatic advancement, I was wholly immersed within the digestive soup of a yateveo tree. It was all frightfully inconvenient."Teaser Tuesdays is hosted by Miz B of Should Be Reading. So for this book meme, I have to randomly turn to a page (or two) and choose a sentence to post here to tease you all with. I'm combining the two book memes and using the same book for both.
My teasers:
"Colourising gardens was a complex task that involved matching the osmotic coefficients of the different plants with the specific gravity of the dyes - and that was before you got started on pressure density evaporation rates and seasonal hue variation". ~pg 12
"There was a fear - enthusiastically stoked by other Chromaticologists, I believe - that if you annoyed a Swatchman they'd flash you a peek of 332-26-85, which dropped an instantaneous haemorrhoid". ~pg 35

What do you think? Would you keep reading?
The language made me laugh. I hope you are enjoying it.

Thanks! It is a fun read and it makes me smile!
Deletei think shades of grey as a title is very intriguing that there are so many books with the same title. the cover is kinda cute. I might want to check this out on goodreads. Great teaser anyway. hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteYes there are so many books which have the same title (and films for that matter) and it can be quite confusing!
Deletethe teaser for shades of grey sounded interesting lol
ReplyDeletemy Teaser tuesday
This sounds fun. Might be a bit slow until I got a hang of the language.

Love Fforde! Enjoy
ReplyDeleteSounds like an interesting world with a unique language...one could get lost in it. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHere's mine: “THEN AND ALWAYS”
I do like the sound of this one...seems much different from the Jasper Fforde book I picked up a few years ago and couldn't get into.

Which Fforde book did you read?
DeleteThis one sound adventurous. Also, is it strange that while I was reading the introduction, I had the voice of Peter Parker in mind? Because the intro totally let out that vibe ha ha!
ReplyDeleteHere's mine!
The Book Thief | Markus Zusak
Love it that you had Peter Parker's voice in your mind. When I read a few more pages later I will have to give it a go myself ;-) I wonder who does the audio for this book!?
DeleteI would definitely keep reading. I've read one book by this author and loved it. I have this one on my wish list. :-)
ReplyDeleteSounds like this author loves words--especially clever ones he made up himself. Could be an interesting book.
ReplyDeleteHere's the link to my Tuesday post: Retirement Can Be Murder.
Ooh, I love your teasers! I haven't read anything by Jasper Fjorde, but I really like the writing style in both the first paragraph and your teasers. Hope you love the rest of the book!
ReplyDeleteMy TT
I have read the first Thursday Next by Fforde. Is this part of the same series?
ReplyDeleteNo it's not the same series. This book is part one in a series but he's a bit slow at bringing out the second book for it - he's been focusing on the other series he has.
DeleteThis sounds like great fun - I'd definitely be tempted to keep reading. Here is my TT http://cleopatralovesbooks.wordpress.com/2014/09/09/tuesday-teaser-september-9/
ReplyDeleteWow, I'm both amused and slightly confused by these teasers, but I'm guessing that's part of the fun of the book. I hope you enjoy reading it!
ReplyDeleteMy Teaser.
Oh yes! I do enjoy weird and wonderful books where you don't really know what's going on exactly but you're enjoying it all the same!
DeleteEnjoy! your read.
ReplyDeleteI love Jasper Fforde's books! If you are enjoying this one, you should check out his Thursday Next series and A Nursery Crime series. They are my favorites! I need to read this one still.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recommendations Kelsey - I just noticed my library ebook lending service has the first book of both of those series available!
DeleteThis does not sound like one I would enjoy. However, I hope you enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteI see you are reading Memoirs of a Geisha - I loved that book.
ReplyDeleteYes and I am really enjoying it. Can't believe I waited so long to get to it!
DeleteThat is quite the interesting beginning, LOL. Have heard a lot about this author lately, but have yet to read him. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a fun read! I love authors that can use language that way!
ReplyDeleteI am totally intrigued with this teaser, I have never heard of this book before!
ReplyDeleteMissie @ A Flurry of Ponderings
I wonder if this book got picked up by persons thinking of the other title! Happy reading.
ReplyDeleteHa, I was slightly confused by the title. But def one I would like to try as well.

Really sorry if this comment posts twice, am having internet probs!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I was SO excited to see this teaser. I read the book when it first came out and was only thinking recently that I really hoped there would be a sequel. Hope you're enjoying the book.
Posted just the once - actually I've had some problems with posting comments today too. I think a sequel is planned but not for a while still I think. Glad you enjoyed it.
DeleteI've never read any Jasper Fforde novels, but after reading this, I might be tempted.
